Title of Lesson: Painting Lines from Nature
Objective: To introduce the concept of line as one of the elements of art. To introduce the work of the Huichol Indians as a vehicle for discussion of line and its place in 2D art.

Grade Level: 4

Objective: To introduce the concept of line as one of the elements of art. To introduce the work of Huichol Indians as a vehicle for discussion of line and its place in 2D art.

MA Art Curriculum Framework Standards:
1.1, 1.2, 2.2, 3.1, 5.1, 8.3

Materials needed:
  • Week One: pencil, paper, natural objects
  • Week Two: 10x10 cardboard, black markers
  • Week Three: glue, yarn, toothpicks

Visuals: Reproductions of Huichol Indian yarn paintings.

Motivation: Discuss the meaning of the word “Line”. What is a line? How many kinds of Line can you think of? What Lines do we see in nature? What is contour line? What is a contour drawing?

Procedure:

Week One: Students will observe and draw leaves, and other natural objects using line only to describe the shape, size and texture of the objects. Students will be encouraged to see patterns and line qualities found in nature and then discuss their findings as a group.

Week Two: Students, using their contour drawings from the previous week, will create a linear composition from nature on a 10x10 piece of cardboard using a marker.

Week Three: Students will be shown reproduction of Huichol Indian Yarn Paintings that make use of use nature and line. A discussion of “How line is used in examples” will follow as well as a demonstration of the process.

Week Four: Students will begin to glue yarn to the contour lines drawn repeating the process till the composition is filled in and resembles a woven painting.

Assessment Criteria: Does the finished piece of work reflect an understanding of the many qualities of line that are present in works of art. Can the students describe verbally and discuss the use and nature of line as it pertains to their art and the world around them?
