Ukrainian Pysanky Egg Design PDF Print E-mail

In this lesson, students become familiar with Ukrainian symbols and color symbols. Students will learn about Patricia Polacco, illustrator, writer and how she was inspired by Monet, Van Gogh and American artist Norman Rockwell. Students will learn how to use visual arts as a non verbal communication to communicate with others. Overview of lesson plan:
Explain to the students that for the next few weeks, we will be working on Pysanky egg design. Discussion of Patricia Polacco, illustrator and book writer. I will ask students if they are familiar with her books. I will show to students example of Pysanky eggs, books, real dyed eggs and poster. Explain to students we will be working on style of art is called Symbolism( anything used as a sign to express ideas and feelings).

Objectives: Students become familiar with Ukrainian symbols and color symbols. Students will learn about Patricia Polacco, illustrator, writer and how she was inspired by Monet, Van Gogh and American artist Norman Rockwell. Students will learn how to use visual arts as a non verbal communication to communicate with others.

Participate in class discussion. Students will learn how to cooperate by sharing materials and ideas to produce a group pattern. Encourage students in creating different forms of art.

Motivation: Bring and show to class different books, pictures, example of eggs and poster. Discuss the process of dying eggs by using wax and dye. Discuss the properties of line and potential for defining form.

Materials:
Drawing paper, fine line markers, pencils, gum eraser, glue and glitter.

Assignment:
Students should come up with special ideas as a group pattern to decorate pysanky eggs.
Each student will choose either a book mark with three small eggs or a large size egg to design, using their own geelings.

Vocabulary: Symbolism, Pysanky, Illustrator.

Evaluation:
Students look at their projects and respond to the following questions:

Is your art work a good example of balance?
Does your art work exhibit good craftsmanship?
How well did you use the media and processes chosen?
Did you finish your project on time?
Did you enjoy working on your project?

Teaching Strands:
Students will demonstrate knowledge of the methods unique to their projects.

Processes of artistry: students will demonstrate knowledge of processes of creating their own art work, refinement and exhibition.
