Under Education Laws and Regulations, 603 CMR 27.00: Student Learning Time, the DOE defines Core subjects the following way:
"Core subjects shall mean the core academic subjects specified in G.L. c. 69, section 1D (mathematics, science and technology, history and social science, English, foreign languages and the arts)....."
Arts teachers should take heart from this statement. The arts not only matter; they count as "time on learning". The arts, by the Department of Education's definition, have a legitimate place in the curriculum. -- Marie Meegan
