Contributed by AECadmin
Week One: July 11-14
Sourcing Inspiration: Building an Interdisciplinary Portfolio

Week Two: July 18-21
Extending Inspiration: New Media and Artistic Inquiry

Now in its third year, the Renewal, Support and Growth Institute provides inspiring learning opportunities in studio-based artist research, interdisciplinary portfolios and new media. Focusing on renewal and growth for the artist-teacher, the two week institute fosters new directions in individual creativity, while supporting new approaches to creative thinking in the classroom. Join Massachusetts College of Art faculty, visiting artists and educators, and your colleagues in the visual arts for this invigorating two-week summer Institute.

Classes meet Monday-Thursday from 9am to 4pm, with an hour lunch break. Out-of-class work takes place in the evenings and during the weekend of July 15-17.

During week one, art teachers develop a studio focused, interdisciplinary portfolio drawing from internal and external sources of inspiration. Our guiding questions will be: What Inspires us to make art? How do we find form for our inspiration? Participants will draw from studio-based group and individual activities, as well as presentations and mini-workshops by artists and scholars. H. H. Arnason’s History of Modern Art will serve as our primary text as we look at visual culture and art history for clues and guideposts in our search for authentic self-expression. Research will be conducted through the lens of personal art-making. Research topics will be established early in the week, and by week’s end, participants will have assembled loosely configured portfolios of artwork, ideas, research materials, collected objects and personal sources marking each participant’s artistic search.
Faculty: John Giordano and Lauren O’Neal

Building on participants’ individual portfolios, the second week of the workshop will consider the aesthetics, craft and expression of new media in a studio environment. We will explore the possibilities of using new media tools for artistic production and reflection, extending our studio inquiry into new media models that support the goals of finding sources and forms for our artistic inspiration. The week will include presentations by guest artists, demonstrations, and virtual collaboration via the AEContent Network. At the end of the two-week program, we will share our portfolios of artwork, ideas, and personal research (in traditional and new media forms) and reflect on the role of authentic self-expression in energizing and inspiring us as teachers.
Faculty: Eleanor Ramsay and Lauren O’Neal

This program is supported, in part, by an award from the Massachusetts Board of Higher Education and the Improving Teacher Quality State Grant Program.
