MassArt will again offer the wonderful Content Institute: 19th Century American Architecture & Public Art
Thanks to the Massachusetts Department of Education, this Institute will be funded to support k-12 teachers.
Last summer k-12 educators came together at MassArt to explore the extraordinary history of the architecure, landscape architecure and public art in 19th Century America. With a great cast of visiting lecturers and interesting bus and walking tours throughout the community, participants came away from the institute with great insights and materials to bring back to their classrooms.
In the late 19th century, as industry drove and influenced the shape of America’s cities: architecture, public art and the art of landscape architecture expressed the American spirit. Employing a strong cross-disciplinary approach, this Institute will focus on late 19th century America. The Institute will explore the art forms of architecture, the design of the land and public art in the context of and as expressions of life in America. These art forms reveal public and private issues facing Americans in the newly industrialized society. Participants will explore the remarkable resources in the Boston environs to make explicit the many connections between the artistic, historic and social contexts. Through the development of curriculum participants will create units of study relevant to the students and communities they work with.
