Observation Drawing of Shoes
Objective: Students will learn that observed shapes and contours of their shoe can be translated into shapes and lines in a drawing.
Grade 5
Part One
Observation Drawing of Shoes

Objective: Students will learn that observed shapes and contours of their shoe can be translated into shapes and lines in a drawing.
Materials: 12"x18" white drawing paper, ebony drawing pencils, (or equivalent) erasers.

Motivation:
Through questions and answers students are guided to focus on shapes and contours of their shoe and asked how they might show these in their picture.
What is the biggest shape? The smallest? Where are the shapes long? Where are they curved or sharp? What kind of line would you draw to show the bottom edge of your shoe? Would it be bumpy or smooth? Can you think of a way to show the stitching on you sneaker? Which part of the shoe will you draw first?
Sharing:
Finished drawings are hung up for sharing. The learning objective can be reinforced here by asking questions like:
Where do you see a curved shape in this drawing? A long shape? Where is the smallest shape?
Which shoe has a bumpy sole? How did the artist show it? Can you find a shoe with stitching? What kind of line show do you see?

Part Two
Transformations:

Shoes become traveling machines
Objective: Students will learn that by adding and changing parts to a drawing of a real object that it can be transformed into something imaginary or fantastic.
Secondary Objective: Students will show a place by what they draw in the background.
Materials: Previous shoe drawing, drawing pencils, erasers, colored pencils

Motivation:
Students are asked to imagine how they could transform their shoe into something that could move by itself? Would it travel on land, in the air, in water, outer space? Other? What parts would you have to add? Where would you connect them? Would you ride in the shoe, on it, or would you wear it? How will show that your shoe is traveling underwater? In outer space?

Writing extension:
Create an advertisement to convince someone to buy your invention.
