Lesson Plan: New England Stone Wall Painting
Objectives: Students will observe traditional New England stone walls. They will draw a stone wall and use watercolor wash technique to paint the textures of the stones.
Mass. Frameworks Standards: (for Grade 8) 1.5, 2.7, 3.4
Materials: pencils, watercolor paper 5” x 14”, watercolors, brushes, mixing containers
Procedure: (Check my Gallery on aecontent.net for photos and an example.)
1) For homework, have the students observe stone walls as they ride home from school.
2) Remind students of the rules of perspective.
3) With pencil, sketch a wall; fill in with irregular rock shapes. Add a few landscape details (tree, flowers, grass, etc.).
4) Using a watercolor wash, paint the sky. While it is still wet, use a paper towel to blot off color to make clouds.
5) Use a wash for the ground.
6) Make a very light gray tint and paint over the sketch of the wall. Layer different grayish tints over individual stones to create a natural look to the rocks.
7) Finish the painting by layering the paints to make trees and grass. |
