Lesson Plan
Incorporating New Media into the Writing Program

This lesson is intended to bring technology and new media into the publication stage of the writing process, where students can present their written work in a slideshow format saved on PowerPoint or KidPix program. This is where the students can combine their abstract written creativity with their visual creativity to publish what they have written.

Age Group: Grades 3 – 5

Goals:
1. To be able to use different programs, such as KidPix, Photoshop, and PowerPoint programs to illustrate and publish written work in a slide show format.
2. To grab images from Google to maneuver or paint directly on Photoshop.
3. Open into Photoshop to play around with using these found images.

Process:
1. Write a short poem of at least 3 lines and use either KidPix or Photoshop to illustrate poem.
2. Take each line or stanza of the poem and type into a separate page of either KidPix or PowerPoint.
3. Illustrate each line or stanza using own illustrations or images created using Photoshop.
4. Save onto a slideshow format with all the bells and whistles learned, such as custom animation, slide transition, timed rehearsal, and sounds if desired.
5. Save on CD and present to an audience using a projector if possible.

Standards:
1. Select and use appropriate applications (e.g., word processing programs, multimedia) for a variety of classroom projects.
2. Using technology to manage and communicate personal information.

Assessment Criteria:
1. Hard copy of project printed out.
2. Project the project for whole class or other audience to view.
3. Project incorporates writing with related illustration.
