This lesson is intended for students grades 6-12. This is based on a photo journal exercise my students did last year. Having students comment on images and artwork they see reguarly engages their visual vocabulary and gets them in the habit of constantly looking at work. Something that doesn't quite happen enough.
Weekly media journal exercise
Goals
To demonstrate social awareness
To develop a visual vocabulary via writing and dialogue
To analyze the importance and impact of imagery in society
To strengthen the student’s understanding of the elements of composition
To develop media and visual literacy

Procedure
Write the following in two separate paragraphs:
1. A detailed description of the image.
a. Do not simply state the subject matter. Instead, discuss all of the image
elements. Critiquing guide according to Edmund Feldman’s steps of art criticism.
2. Your critique of the image.
a. Explain why this image caught your eye. Explain how the elements in your
description work together in this image. Interpret this artwork by speculating on the intent of the artist.

Your sources are all around and you are bombarded by hundreds of images every day, Pay attention!
Media Element
Each week, students will have to learn and demonstrate an element of new media, examples follow: (copyright having been discussed)
1. Produce a physical copy, determine if it is an original or reproduction
2. Print out an image from the internet
3. Send an image to your e-mail account
4. Display the image on a web browser
5. Alter the image in some way.
6. Send the image in an attachment to a friend’s e-mail
7. Find the image in at least three different sources
8. Add text to the image: poem, descriptive words etc
9. Explore three paths that stem from this work and create a visual response to it.
