BIOGRAPHY

This list of easy biographies is for students in grades 4-8, depending on student’s interests and reading levels.  The Wishinsky book is one of my recent favorites.  Robert Gould Shaw, Olmsted and Bartholdi are familiar figures these days so I think it’s great to introduce lesser knowns such as Gutzon, French, Fraser and Lewis.  Each story gives students information about US history as well as the influences in an artist’s life.

Frederick Law Olmsted

Dunlap, Julie    Parks for the People: A Story about Frederick Law Olmsted   1994   Gr.6-8

Johnston, Joanna   Frederick Law Olmsted: Partner with Nature    1975

Wishinsky, Freida   The Man Who Made Parks: The Story of Parkbuilder Frederick Law Olmsted   1999

This is a great read-aloud book for introducing biographies.  A real hero’s tale with beautiful illustrations
