This lesson integrates three disciplines -VISUAL ART, COMPUTER TECHNOLOGY AND CREATIVE WRITING. This lesson was written by Paul N. Papadonis (Art Teacher) and Susan Gilmore (English Teacher) at Norwell High School.
It is important to remind students that their travels need not be extravagant and that local visits can be just as interesting if they have some information and knowledge of the destinations ahead of time.
CREATIVE WRITING LESSON
CONCEPT OBJECTIVE
Stuents will write an original essay on a place of importance in their travels. This essay will demonsrate a knowledge of the world around them through the use of various descriptive devices:
-smile
-metaphor
-personification
-allteration
LEARNER OUTCOME
As a result of this lesson students will be more farmiliar with essay structure and use of descriptive devices.
MATERIALS
Packet: "Place of Importance"
Text: "Auto Biography for Students"
PROCEDURES
Days 1-3
Review essay writing procedures. Oral interpretation of sample essays in packet.
Days 4-5
Rough copy of essay/peer editing
Days 6-8
Final copy of essay with student reading essays in class out loud. This reading will be accompanied by photographs from photo class.
DIGITAL PHOTOGRAPHY LESSON
CONCEPT OBJECTIVE
Ask students to recall a travel experience through pictures and demonstrate an improved cultural awareness of places they visit.
LEARNER OUTCOME
As a result of this lesson students will make photographs in the form of a travelque that fullfill the following criteria:
-Photograph of a person in typical dress or a photo of a native custom.
-Photograph of a detail from the trip (ex. shop, windows street signs, meals, cups, etc.).
-Photograph of the first thing you see and feel when you leave the airport or arrive in your destination.
BECAUSE STUDENTS WILL TRAVEL AT VARYING TIMES, IT IS IMPORTANT FOR THE INSTRUCTOR TO START THIS PROJECT EARLY IN THE SCHOOL YEAR. ASKING STUDENTS TO DECLARE THE DATE OF THEIR TRAVEL DESTINATION WILL HELP ELIMINATE CONFUSION.
MATERIALS
Any type of digital camera
Page Maker or Microsoft Word Software and computers
PROCEDURES
Students will do a reading from "The Art of Digital Photography by Tom Ang pages 104- 109.
Day 1
Students will come to class with five facts that they have retriewed from the reading and be ready to share those facts with the class for discussion.
Days 2-3
Students should do research on the Internet concerning a country, state, or new local they plan to vacation to in the near future.
Days 4-7
Students will incorporate their photographs with writing to make a two page layout for a traveloque using Page Maker, Microsoft Word or Power Point.
Students could submit their finished traveloque to the school newspaper for publishing or hang the printed version of their work on an art display. |
