As a result of this unit students will be able to use influences of 19th Century landscape designers to create an original contemporary landscape design. The Unit Plan: 19th Century Landscape Architecture: Appreciation and Design is to foster an understanding and appreciation of the development of landscape architecture during the 19th century. Through studying the development of the public park, the urban cemetery, students will gain insight into the significance of landscape architecture and its sociological ramifications. The final project will be a landscape design that addresses challenging contemporary issues.

Curricular Target: This Unit is designed to be the culminating unit in a semester long Architecture Design and Drafting course for high school students grades 9-12.
Prior Knowledge Necessary: (This is covered in the first four weeks of the Architecture design and Drafting course. Observational drawing skills, knowledge of use and care of drafting materials, ability to create scale drawings and floor plans.
Time Frame: The Unit takes 14-18 class periods of approximately 50 minutes in duration. At CCHS, that is about 5 weeks.
Theme: History of 19th Century Urban Parks, Influences, Purposes and Aesthetics.
Over-Arching Essential Question: How could an understanding of 19th Century landscape architecture influence contemporary urban park design?
