Contributed by AECadmin
This is a lesson for Grades Pre-Kindergarten to Grade 2. We studied a unit on line and color using Eric Carle's image making techinique to create our accordian style books. Eric Carle "Image Made” Picture Books
Day and Night
A Unit on Line and Color

Grade Level: Pre Kindergarten- Grade 2

Goal: For all students to have knowledge of the elements of art and be able to apply them, use them, and see them in art.

Objective: Through many processes of painting, bookmaking, and image making, students will

Vocabulary:
Warm Colors
Cool Colors
Wax Resist
Line
Color
Accordion Book
Signature Book
Illustration Board
Folding

Materials:
70 lb drawing/painting paper
Watercolor paints
White Crayons
Scissors
Drawing Pencils
Glue
Illustration board 4"X6"
Heavy Weight Strathmore Paper 5"X14"

Concept Introduction: Over the course of the six-week span of lessons, students will learn the works of Eric Carle and his process of art and image making though the creation of an accordion book.

Each student's picture book will illustrate the following ideas/concepts:
Fine Motor Skills (though cutting, folding, and drawing)
Use of color theory knowledge
Creating images using basic shape
Creating a series of papers that use line as design and texture to create interesting and unique surfaces
Creating pictures or "images" through a series of drawing, cutting, and then pasting

Concept Application: Though multiple weeks of learning and looking at work by Eric Carle and discussing his methods, students will first create their own "Image made papers" using knowledge of color theory and wax resist. Once all color combinations have been made, students then create a book and then fill the book with images based on the concept day and night.

Week 1- Introduce the idea of Image making, what it is, what famous artist uses it, and why it is important, fun, or a unique way to make art. Students will then discuss line (curved, wavy, long, thin, diagonal, horizontal, vertical, etc). Using a white crayon each student will create a series of wavy and straight lines and then paint over their white crayon (wax resist) using warm colors (red, orange, and yellow)

Week 2- Cool colors (green, blue, purple) scheme using line as texture for wax resist.

Week 3- Primary, Secondary, Tertiary Color Image Made paper.

Week 4- Discuss the difference between a Signature (pages that turn) and Accordion (pages that fold and unfold like a fan or accordion) Book. Through a series of folds each student creates a book using two covers (illustration board) and papers in-between to create a folded page effect. Pages are glued in and dry until the next week.

Week 5- Day sky created. Local color theory is discussed (green grass, blue sky, etc). A class talk about the color schemes helps us to decide what colors to use for both day (warm) and night (cool) scenes. Ideas are generated about what is in the day sky (clouds, sun, etc) and how to arrive at those images will be demonstrated through basic shape drawing. Teacher will also demonstrate the process of drawing ideas and images on the back of the painted paper, cutting and then gluing with the "colorful" side up.

Week 6- Night sky created. Discussion of what is in the night scene. Ideas about what colors to use discussed. Go over process again (drawing and cutting) and then use class to create the other side of the book.

Assessment/Reflection/Evaluation/Grading:
Once the book is completed, the class will discuss the following ideas/concepts/questions:

How do colors make us think about certain things?
Do all things have to be the colors that we know them to be?
Where can you find lines in nature?

Is image making an interesting way of creating art?

Why is it important to know how to make books?
